I ordered this on Sunday, 07, 2009 arrived the next day. I’ll post more reviews about the tool once i get to know them well.
Absolute Garbage!

The product manager and design team for the Dremel XPR are despicable. The kit, the case, the accessories are great but they can shove the actual Dremel 400 XPR tool. My son used a Dremel like tool from Harbor Freight for about a year with no problems. He cut and drilled and shaped everything. I paid 6 (six) dollars for it and it came in a kit with bits etc. It was a small light duty tool, not much power, but he used it all the time on everything. Small desktop projects. I used it in the garage on light stuff. Kept waiting for it to melt, explode, burn up, but no problems. He needed something with more power because that little thing would take a long time to do bigger stuff, so we bought him the Dremel XPR kit and the work station. First one smoked and stopped working the first hour. Second one was dead out of the box. Third one lasted two weeks then smoked and died. If they want to KILL a brand this is how to do it. This was my first Dremel and the last. Going back to Harbor Freight and buying the bigger version of the first one I got my son. It’s $20 with kit.

This is a GREAT kit that is extremely versatile for around the house projects and tinkering in the garage. It’s a bargain on here and worth every penny. There are many different bits that are sold seperately but very handy to have as well.

Hello, I had great luck with the dremel while doing eeny weeeeny projects. I than needed a tool for a light/medium job. I just had to cut through some sheet metal to cut out small sections. The thing started smoking, smelling, and sputtering to its death. I had to surgically pull out the melted bushings and I than replaced them. It worked again for about 15 minutes, and than its death occured again. This time I am going to bury the eenny wieeny tool for eeny wieeny jobs. If you have to do jobs larger than polishing your little girl’s doll, than do not count on this 400 XPR series dremel!
Good product but not the same quality as older units.

So far the new tool and accessories have done what their supposed to do. I do feel that the quality of the main unit is less than that of older units; it has a different “feel” and doesn’t seem as solidly built.
Great tool

All I can say is this is a great tool. I was always looking for that small tool that would do just about everything. This is it! I can use it on things that are just too small for other power tools. It has just about every attachment you can think of. From turning it into a small router to a small jig saw.

I bought this kit to do some gunsmithing work. So far it has been excellent but I haven’t beat on it to hard. Previously I had a dremel model that took batteries and the battery would be dead after a minute of work. So I upgraded to this kit and haven’t looked back. Only time will tell how long it will last. Amazon was great to work with they shipped my order fast even though I selected the free shipping option I received my order in 5 days.
This is as good as the old tool it a case of over expectations

I read all the reveiws but was intrigued with the tool after seeing the heavier duty Fein commercials . My Dremels had been taken in a break in and those kits were no longer available to be replaced so this was about the same price as one . I bought it .
I will just go over the important things to me . First this will use all the old tools however there are four different collets and it only comes with one . You will have to do some work after you buy this to get more accessories . They are priced reasonable . It would of been better if they truely had a monstor kit with a lithium cordless and and everything you could even want . You must not use this to do woodwork where a regular jig saw or ciricular saw would work . This is for finish work . You can fix one or two pieces of tile but its not a Fein if thats what you want buy that . For me with regular hand tools and this I can build some nice little bird feeders , adjust trim around the house . If your longing for just the old days buy the lithium cordless kit . If you think having a light duty trim tool that will cost another $100 for the individual accessories is worth it for you buy this . If your making models with light duty that just need a occasional light duty cut this is ok otherwise I can see it would heat up and fry . You have been warned now in several reveiws . If you want a Fein buy that tool if you want a old school dremel thats a little heavier duty ( bulky too ) Then buy this . Find the accesorry collets so you can use all the old tools for a few bucks and buy the attachments you need for finish work and be prepared to let the tool cool often if cutting anything rougher then 1/8 paneling or trim period . I did cut the corners out of 1 inch pine paneling with it for cabinet work but it was very hot . I should of used a regular jig saw . Hope this helps . Oh and the planer will get you that extra sixteenth off a door but its the same thing one at a time and cool the tool for 10 minutes a few times a door . This is not for working people just around the house with time on a day off . Restful work as you call it .
Oh and I can see how the instructions are overwhelming . Calm down use common sense and you can find them online and adjust the print to make it easier on us old with old eyes and hands to use . When using this tool the rule is if you have to force it to cut your in over its head and its going to heat up and fry . RPM’s are your friend . Oh and dont forget the break in 5 minutes on high no load out of the box first .
Not a Serious Tool
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
As others have said, this tool may be good for hobby work in pine or balsam, but it’s not a serious tool for extended work in denser woods, ceramics, or metals. Mine broke after fairly light use. For those of you looking for a more serious professional rotary tool, I recommend the Proxxon 38481 IB/E Pro model. It’s sturdy, has a more powerful motor, & won’t be breaking on tougher jobs.
VERY NICE ALL-IN-ONE PACKAGE FOR THE PRICE !!

Can’t beat this for the price! If you bought the accessories separately, you would spend at least double easily. Amazon does offer the best price too. Got mine in a gold-box discount – saved only about $10.00 – but better in my pocket. Great rotary tool – with power to spare. Love the compact case, which is molded to house many of the available accessories. Two of the accessories – the multi-saw and planer – are only available with this model – 400 XPR. Gotta say I love this thing – has tons of uses – the more you own it – the more uses you’ll think of for it! My only gripe (which is why I gave it 4 stars and not 5), is that the natural way to hold this thing would block the air vents a bit – which you CANNOT do – unless you enjoy motor burn out. THe 300 series offers the best ergonomically shaped tool for use – but the 400 XPR offers so much more – it’s worth this slight inconvenience. Enjoy !!
