I wanted to learn engraving so I bought this little inexpensive tool. The first thing I ever did turned out really well. I engraved a hummingbird and a flower on a glass. Since then I have engraved names on stainless covered books and frames. A little loud but works well for me.

the item i was sent is not the item shown in the picture. the item that was sent to me is 290-05 if that item is even right mt package has 290-01 on it! these items are noot matching up to the item codes and also the pictures !

I engraved my guns, laptop, tools, tvs, video game systems etc, all with the included bit and it worked great. Depending on the setting and material, I was generally able to write as I would with a pen.

Created long lasting pictures drawn by my 4yr old (but I do have a question)

I bought the Dremel Engraver last year and used it to create gifts from my daughter for her grandparents. She had just learned how to write the alphabet so I had her use a permanent marker to write their names on key chains that had a metal plate that was intended to be professionally engraved. I just traced over her shaky handwriting with my novice shaky engraving. It wasn’t a flawless copy of what she did but there was no doubt that it was her handwriting. The permanent marker just rubbed/washed off. Everyone loved them.

This year I bought some vases from I k e a that were made from very thick glass. For a wedding shower gift she drew pictures and wrote the names of the bride and groom around the vase. Once again I traced over the marker and her pictures and writing were preserved. Once again, a huge hit.

So, I have found this tool ideal for preserving art work/writing done by my 4yr old.

My only question is this…on the photo for this product the person is engraving a glass plate with beautiful leaves on it. How is the finished product so beautiful? I am only beginning to use this tool. I could improve with practice but am I missing some accessories or tools? I really don’t know anything about engraving so I would love to hear any suggestions.

The tool works fine. Note that the cutting tip is the important ‘business end’ of this tool. It is supplied with a general purpose point tip, great for writing your name on something. But you can put any tip in there you want–and it will make a difference. You can buy other Dremel tips or make your own. You can easily reshape the provided tip into a more traditional engraving style. By the way the packaging states that the tool is made by Bosch in Mexico for Dremel. It’s a bit loud, pretty much like all electric engravers though. If you want depth to your engraving the tool can do it, you just have to repeatedly go over (and over, and over) your design. The variable stroke length does help but frankly doesn’t make a large difference in most metals and you give up some tool control on the higher settings.

Wow, I was actually amazed at the power of this product and the performance. I highly recommend this engraver. The tip does fit the stencil, some one mentioned that the stencil wasn’t the right one. I had no problem, and the overall performance is worth 5 stars. Cheers.

Dremel 290-01 -Easy to Use- Does the job

I had to engrave several cameras and the engraving area was limited. The dremel was easy to hold like a pencil and easy to control. The right amount of pressure allowed for light etching or deeper engraving. I was nervous at first because I thought it was going to go all over the place. The dremel stayed exactly where I wanted it to stay. The stencil template that was included didn’t work for me because the letters and numbers were too big for the engraving area but I will try it the next time. I would definitely recommend this dremel. For a craft newbie like me it did the job nicely.

I had recently purchased a different engraver from my local hardware store. It was my first time using an engraver but even so I could tell it wasn’t working well at all. I took it right back and bought this Dremel. Man, what a difference!! This thing works like crazy! I feel like I can engrave anything successfully. Don’t worry about making this purchase. Just go ahead and buy it.
